Shearling + Fire

Gosh, red lipstick is hard to pull off sometimes, right?  Finding the right shade of red is the first challenge, but then I feel like the entire time you’re wearing it, you’re constantly nervous about whether it’s migrated outside your lip line, onto your teeth, or onto whatever you’re wearing.  It’s hard to relax when you’re wearing a red lip.  I’m always on high alert.

So needless to say, I was terrified when Julie told me she wanted to try something bold, and subsequently retrieved the loudest, brightest red lipstick out of her makeup palette.  I’m pretty sure I looked horrified.  But when Julie is having a beauty ‘vision’, you don’t question it.  You just go with it.  You close your eyes and let her make a masterpiece.

Behold… Julie’s signature cat eye liner with a super-mega-bright lip… yes you can pull off both at the same time 🙂

P.S. – I stalked this shearling bomber jacket from TopShop for MONTHS until they re-stocked my size.  Yes, the collar was a little overbearing at first, but it always makes a feminine outfit just a little bit grittier, tougher.  Check out the link to the faux one below by Lily Aldridge for Velvet…

Rain rain, don’t go away!

It’s been really rainy here in FL lately, which is actually kind of GREAT since we can wear all our cute wellies!  I love any chance I get to wear my Hunter Tour wellingtons, they’re a closet staple.  I wear them in the rain with jeans, leggings, dresses, etc.  But also to the beach with the dog so I can run around in the waves.  And I’ve even worn them as snow boots with big fuzzy socks.  They’re kind of perfect for everything.  And at the end of the day, just rinse them off with the hose and stash them back in the closet.

The Hunter Tour boot is much lighter and slimmer than the original ones.  And you can wrap the leg around the base to pack them in your suitcase, too.  They’ve made recent appearances on the blog here and here 🙂

Pray for more rain!

Winter & Summer Blues

We all love it when the weather begins to get warmer and Spring arrives. But do you ever feel slightly disappointed that you can no longer wear all your fun Winter clothes? It’s such a sad day when I move all my boots and sweaters into storage (a.k.a., the guest bedroom closet). No more wool trench, over-the-knee boots, leather gloves, or chunky cable turtleneck. Sad. Just sad.

But the sadness quickly dissipates once I realize that I don’t have to say goodbye to all my winter clothes. Some can easily be repurposed and made fresh again with just a change of the accessories. Like the ubiquitous baby blue mini skirt, that was EVERYWHERE this winter, on every blogger and in every magazine. It’s got a thick, almost neoprene texture, so it’s tough enough to wear in cold weather, but the silhouette and color just scream ‘Spring!’

On a chilly day I’ve paired it with black OTK boots and a wool moto jacket. But then it can also go classic “girly” with a floaty ethereal blouse. So much fun!!

So before you put away your winter items, think twice whether you could still wear it with shorts instead of jeans, or with a tank top instead of a sweater. Your wardrobe just might be bigger than you think 😉

Jimmy Choo ‘Gypsy’ OTK = perfection

choo1

So I promised you more from my first blog shoot, and here is the next installment…

I suffer from the affliction known as “narrow calf syndrome”.  You might be thinking, ummm that’s not really a problem?  But I’m here to assure you, it is indeed a real problem.  When you can’t find knee-high or OTK boots that don’t sag and slouch around your miserably scrawny legs, you resign yourself to the fact that maybe you’re just destined to wear ankle boots for the rest of your life (which wouldn’t be so bad, truthfully, but what a shame to miss out on so many great fashion moments with tall boots…)

I can’t tell you how many boots I’ve tried on over the years, only to be met with disappointment that “narrow calf syndrome” has struck again.  So when I saw the Jimmy Choo ‘Gypsy’ black suede over-the-knee boots at Neiman’s, with a hefty price tag no less, I almost talked myself out of trying them.  “Why would these boots be any different from the last 37 I’ve tried?!”  But something told me that the universe was finally going to change my luck.  And I was right.

THEY.  ARE.  PERFECT.  Seriously, divine.  Those designers at Jimmy Choo understand how to craft a suede shaft that hugs but doesn’t squeeze the leg (because the ‘sausage casing’ look is just as bad as the floppy ‘I-look-like-a-little-kid-wearing-my-mom’s-boots’ look).  It doesn’t matter what your legs look like, or the circumference of your calves.  As long as your boots fit your leg, then it works.

These Jimmy Choo’s are a classic, a true wardrobe staple.  And you might call me crazy, but that is worth every (exorbitant) penny.  So here’s my homage to the Gypsy boot.  These pics don’t even do them justice, so will spend my life trying to capture their essence and perfection on film.  Or maybe at least another three outfits 😉
