Shearling + Fire

Gosh, red lipstick is hard to pull off sometimes, right?  Finding the right shade of red is the first challenge, but then I feel like the entire time you’re wearing it, you’re constantly nervous about whether it’s migrated outside your lip line, onto your teeth, or onto whatever you’re wearing.  It’s hard to relax when you’re wearing a red lip.  I’m always on high alert.

So needless to say, I was terrified when Julie told me she wanted to try something bold, and subsequently retrieved the loudest, brightest red lipstick out of her makeup palette.  I’m pretty sure I looked horrified.  But when Julie is having a beauty ‘vision’, you don’t question it.  You just go with it.  You close your eyes and let her make a masterpiece.

Behold… Julie’s signature cat eye liner with a super-mega-bright lip… yes you can pull off both at the same time 🙂

P.S. – I stalked this shearling bomber jacket from TopShop for MONTHS until they re-stocked my size.  Yes, the collar was a little overbearing at first, but it always makes a feminine outfit just a little bit grittier, tougher.  Check out the link to the faux one below by Lily Aldridge for Velvet…

Plaid jumpsuit apparatus

I’m not gonna lie, I loooooove rompers and jumpsuits.  They’re like adult onesies.  You can enjoy wearing pants without having to agonize over what top to pair with them.  It’s all decided for you.  Brilliant.  But — and this is a huge caveat — you have to make sure they fit you PROPERLY.  Critical.  Non-negotiable.  Otherwise they actually look like a baby onesie.  Not a good look.  Except for babies.

Usually it’s a torso-proportion issue.  Too long, or too short.  Maybe you need a high-neck, flowy, wide-leg style to lengthen, or you might look better in a cute cropped trendy style with spaghetti straps.  Try various options to see what works.  And when you find a romper or jumpsuit that fits like a glove, you must go with it.  Embrace it.  Rock it.  Own it.

Such is the case with this jumpsuit from Zara.  Black watch plaid, sheer top, perfectly bloused out, slim pencil leg, expertly tailored.  Perfect!  All for the bargain price of $39.99 on sale!  Add some studded stilettos (last seen here & here), and you have a very simple chic look, no accessories required.  Let the statement piece speak for itself.

Maybe this inspires you to try on a jumpsuit next time you see one in the store?  I hope so 🙂

Gucci Retro-spective

Sometimes I pick things from my closet that are so ladylike and proper. I know, it’s weird. For me, at least.  (It did happen here, too…)

But gosh, this Gucci dress just spoke to me when I saw it… I snatched it off the rack and it fit like a glove, so it must have been meant to be, right? Well, it also could have been because it was 75% off, who knows. But the color was so rich and vibrant, and while it’s clearly got the secretary vibe, it also felt like it could go a little rock ‘n roll, like how Rachael Zoe might style it, with a floppy hat and OTK suede boots. (*must try this…*)

And here’s how Gucci styled it on their runway: all out GLAM!

So let’s go for ladylike polish first. How about a glossy raspberry lipstick. A classic Yves Saint Laurent ‘Muse’ bag. And a side-swept ‘do. Finish with some obsession-worthy heels from J.Crew, no less.  Hope you like!

Remember, bright color is your friend, it’s like getting a facial without spending the money 🙂

Rain rain, don’t go away!

It’s been really rainy here in FL lately, which is actually kind of GREAT since we can wear all our cute wellies!  I love any chance I get to wear my Hunter Tour wellingtons, they’re a closet staple.  I wear them in the rain with jeans, leggings, dresses, etc.  But also to the beach with the dog so I can run around in the waves.  And I’ve even worn them as snow boots with big fuzzy socks.  They’re kind of perfect for everything.  And at the end of the day, just rinse them off with the hose and stash them back in the closet.

The Hunter Tour boot is much lighter and slimmer than the original ones.  And you can wrap the leg around the base to pack them in your suitcase, too.  They’ve made recent appearances on the blog here and here 🙂

Pray for more rain!

Winter & Summer Blues

We all love it when the weather begins to get warmer and Spring arrives. But do you ever feel slightly disappointed that you can no longer wear all your fun Winter clothes? It’s such a sad day when I move all my boots and sweaters into storage (a.k.a., the guest bedroom closet). No more wool trench, over-the-knee boots, leather gloves, or chunky cable turtleneck. Sad. Just sad.

But the sadness quickly dissipates once I realize that I don’t have to say goodbye to all my winter clothes. Some can easily be repurposed and made fresh again with just a change of the accessories. Like the ubiquitous baby blue mini skirt, that was EVERYWHERE this winter, on every blogger and in every magazine. It’s got a thick, almost neoprene texture, so it’s tough enough to wear in cold weather, but the silhouette and color just scream ‘Spring!’

On a chilly day I’ve paired it with black OTK boots and a wool moto jacket. But then it can also go classic “girly” with a floaty ethereal blouse. So much fun!!

So before you put away your winter items, think twice whether you could still wear it with shorts instead of jeans, or with a tank top instead of a sweater. Your wardrobe just might be bigger than you think 😉

A Royal Picnic

I guess if I had actually been invited to a Royal picnic, this would be a good outfit choice.  But alas, Kate Middleton has not invited me to a soireé… it’s simply just the best way to describe today’s outfit… 🙂

I am pretty obsessed with cobalt / royal blue.  Have had this gingham shirt for awhile – a total steal from Old Navy! – but when I saw these shoes at Topshop, I think my heart actually skipped a beat.  (I’m also lusting for these Valentinos!)  I paired them with white jeans, and ultimately decided on accessories in ecru, which I actually really like against the white.  Keeps the look nice and light, instead of how it might look with a dark belt and bag.

And if you’re looking for the perfect white ankle-length jeans for Spring, look no further than the Paige Denim skyline ankle peg.  I buy a pair of these skinnies every year.  They have some stretch, but most importantly, the denim is thick enough to hide lumps, bumps, panty lines, etc.  Just wear undergarments that match your skin tone, and they will disappear under these jeans.  Most white jeans have way too much Lycra, and are too thin = unforgiving.  These are perfection!  Get a pair, you will not regret it!

Happy shopping!

Back in Business (attire)

Hi everyone!  Took a little hiatus for a few months, and now I’m back in business!

Spring has sprung, so it’s time to take all the Fall/Winter pieces in our closets and find new ways to re-purpose them for the warmer weather.

First up:  J.Brand leather skinnies

I love a crisp, striped button-down, and I wear this particular J.Crew basic for work all the time. But for a day of shopping or dinner with friends, instead of pairing it with jeans or capris, I prefer something a little more unexpected. These J.Brand leather pants are such a workhorse in my wardrobe (worth every penny!), and I love them with this look. Add some Prada sunnies, and cute cap-toe ballet flats, and we’ve got casual sophistication… my favorite 🙂

Polka Dots, Spikes, and Chains

I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a girly-girl, but every so often I just have an overwhelming desire to wear a flippy dress with a bow. Classic feminine style. It was unseasonably warm here in FL the other week, so I took my girly-girl ensemble to the street – okay, just to a lunch. But I couldn’t resist sneaking in an edgy chain-link necklace under that bow tie, just to contrast from the frill. The studded cross-body mini bag also toughens it up a bit, too. Gotta counteract the uncharacteristically pink lipstick, too. I really don’t know what came over me.

And what shoes does one wear with a girly-girl dress? 5-inch Saint Laurents, naturally 😉

If you’ve ever wanted to…

If you’ve ever wanted to get your makeup done by a professional, but you keep putting it off and eventually decide that you can do a fine job of it on your own… I’m here to tell you, it is awesome!! And let’s be clear, wedding makeup doesn’t count. I’m talking about pampering yourself for no good reason other than to have fun and unleash your inner supermodel that we all have within ourselves.

Don’t believe me? Check out what Miss Amber Flowers at Cortello Salon created in just 45 minutes. She is a magician, literally. I showed up for my appointment with ZERO makeup on. No tinted moisturizer, no Touch Éclat undereye concealer, nothing. Just my usual bedhead, blemishes and blotchiness in tow. I had checked out her portfolio beforehand, and wow, she can really transform people, both models and everyday folks like myself. After she expertly applied my foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, highlighter, eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, a few fake lashes, lip liner, lipstick, and lip gloss (whew!), she turned me around so I could see the finished product, and I swear to you, I shrieked out loud. Like, I didn’t even recognize myself, at all. Didn’t I just look like a bum off the street only a few minutes ago?! Amazing. Simply amazing. And Amber had me laughing the entire time, she is insanely funny, and totally gorgeous, so she practices what she preaches.

Will I wear this much makeup every single day? Obviously not. But for my blog pics, date night, or a girls night out, I will definitely do this again.

So, If you’ve ever wanted to get your makeup done by a professional, and you aren’t sure that it’s worth it, the answer is YES YES YES! It is! Go for it, you will feel like a million bucks 💋

If you live in the Jacksonville, FL area, you can book a makeup application or lesson with Amber by calling Cortello Salon at (904) 853-6222. Her website is so stunning, and check her out on Instagram at @amberflowers, or on Twitter. She is totally amazeballs, you guys.

Intervention.

20140113-205146.jpgHave you ever been so obsessed with a piece of clothing, that you wear it way too much? Season after season, it just goes with everything you own, so you keep wearing it. Over and over and over. Your friends and family might have even staged an intervention because they’re worried about your unhealthy attachment to this clothing item. For me, it’s my black wool trench coat. Several years ago in NYC, I saw a woman on the street with the most perfect winter coat. So perfect that I literally turned around and ran after her, like a crazy person, to ask her where she got it. Zara, she said. Thank God, I thought, something I can actually afford. And thank God there’s a Zara on every corner in New York.

I’ve been besties with that coat ever since. It needs no accessories. No scarf, no jewelry. It’s perfect on its own. So here’s my homage to the most versatile workhorse in my closet. I love you, Zara coat, xoxo.

And thank you to my beautiful friend, Cynthia, who took these beautiful pictures, and who convinced me that a vacant auto shop in the middle of nowhere really would be the perfect place to photograph a trench coat. Smartest woman I know.
