A Royal Picnic

I guess if I had actually been invited to a Royal picnic, this would be a good outfit choice.  But alas, Kate Middleton has not invited me to a soireé… it’s simply just the best way to describe today’s outfit… 🙂

I am pretty obsessed with cobalt / royal blue.  Have had this gingham shirt for awhile – a total steal from Old Navy! – but when I saw these shoes at Topshop, I think my heart actually skipped a beat.  (I’m also lusting for these Valentinos!)  I paired them with white jeans, and ultimately decided on accessories in ecru, which I actually really like against the white.  Keeps the look nice and light, instead of how it might look with a dark belt and bag.

And if you’re looking for the perfect white ankle-length jeans for Spring, look no further than the Paige Denim skyline ankle peg.  I buy a pair of these skinnies every year.  They have some stretch, but most importantly, the denim is thick enough to hide lumps, bumps, panty lines, etc.  Just wear undergarments that match your skin tone, and they will disappear under these jeans.  Most white jeans have way too much Lycra, and are too thin = unforgiving.  These are perfection!  Get a pair, you will not regret it!

Happy shopping!

Conversely, I’ve come back around…

This Spring, sneakers and slip-ons are everywhere! The classic Chuck Taylor’s are as hot as ever, but the last time I owned a pair was in elementary school (they were pink high-tops, so rad). However, when I saw this recent pic of the fabulous Rosie Huntington-Whiteley just strolling out of LAX, even I was sold. But her Chucks didn’t look as clunky… must scour the internet for this sleek new version…

Found them! The Chuck Taylor “dainty oxford”. Brilliant. Fashionable. Perfect. Dainty. Clicked “purchase” in less than 10 seconds after finding them. They arrive in 3-5 business days, and then we shall photograph them with… everything!!

Back in Business (attire)

Hi everyone!  Took a little hiatus for a few months, and now I’m back in business!

Spring has sprung, so it’s time to take all the Fall/Winter pieces in our closets and find new ways to re-purpose them for the warmer weather.

First up:  J.Brand leather skinnies

I love a crisp, striped button-down, and I wear this particular J.Crew basic for work all the time. But for a day of shopping or dinner with friends, instead of pairing it with jeans or capris, I prefer something a little more unexpected. These J.Brand leather pants are such a workhorse in my wardrobe (worth every penny!), and I love them with this look. Add some Prada sunnies, and cute cap-toe ballet flats, and we’ve got casual sophistication… my favorite 🙂

I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a girly-girl, but every so often I just have an overwhelming desire to wear a flippy dress with a bow. Classic feminine style. It was unseasonably warm here in FL the other week, so I took my girly-girl ensemble to the street – okay, just to a lunch. But I couldn’t resist sneaking in an edgy chain-link necklace under that bow tie, just to contrast from the frill. The studded cross-body mini bag also toughens it up a bit, too. Gotta counteract the uncharacteristically pink lipstick, too. I really don’t know what came over me.

And what shoes does one wear with a girly-girl dress? 5-inch Saint Laurents, naturally 😉

If you’ve ever wanted to…

If you’ve ever wanted to get your makeup done by a professional, but you keep putting it off and eventually decide that you can do a fine job of it on your own… I’m here to tell you, it is awesome!! And let’s be clear, wedding makeup doesn’t count. I’m talking about pampering yourself for no good reason other than to have fun and unleash your inner supermodel that we all have within ourselves.

Don’t believe me? Check out what Miss Amber Flowers at Cortello Salon created in just 45 minutes. She is a magician, literally. I showed up for my appointment with ZERO makeup on. No tinted moisturizer, no Touch Éclat undereye concealer, nothing. Just my usual bedhead, blemishes and blotchiness in tow. I had checked out her portfolio beforehand, and wow, she can really transform people, both models and everyday folks like myself. After she expertly applied my foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, highlighter, eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, a few fake lashes, lip liner, lipstick, and lip gloss (whew!), she turned me around so I could see the finished product, and I swear to you, I shrieked out loud. Like, I didn’t even recognize myself, at all. Didn’t I just look like a bum off the street only a few minutes ago?! Amazing. Simply amazing. And Amber had me laughing the entire time, she is insanely funny, and totally gorgeous, so she practices what she preaches.

Will I wear this much makeup every single day? Obviously not. But for my blog pics, date night, or a girls night out, I will definitely do this again.

So, If you’ve ever wanted to get your makeup done by a professional, and you aren’t sure that it’s worth it, the answer is YES YES YES! It is! Go for it, you will feel like a million bucks 💋

If you live in the Jacksonville, FL area, you can book a makeup application or lesson with Amber by calling Cortello Salon at (904) 853-6222. Her website is so stunning, and check her out on Instagram at @amberflowers, or on Twitter. She is totally amazeballs, you guys.

Intervention.

20140113-205146.jpgHave you ever been so obsessed with a piece of clothing, that you wear it way too much? Season after season, it just goes with everything you own, so you keep wearing it. Over and over and over. Your friends and family might have even staged an intervention because they’re worried about your unhealthy attachment to this clothing item. For me, it’s my black wool trench coat. Several years ago in NYC, I saw a woman on the street with the most perfect winter coat. So perfect that I literally turned around and ran after her, like a crazy person, to ask her where she got it. Zara, she said. Thank God, I thought, something I can actually afford. And thank God there’s a Zara on every corner in New York.

I’ve been besties with that coat ever since. It needs no accessories. No scarf, no jewelry. It’s perfect on its own. So here’s my homage to the most versatile workhorse in my closet. I love you, Zara coat, xoxo.

And thank you to my beautiful friend, Cynthia, who took these beautiful pictures, and who convinced me that a vacant auto shop in the middle of nowhere really would be the perfect place to photograph a trench coat. Smartest woman I know.

1 Sweater, 3 Ways (part three)

20140113-114836.jpgHave you ever worn hair extensions? If you have, I’m so jealous, you are amazingly confident! But for the rest of us chickens, we’re terrified to even try them, right? “They’re going to look fake!” “People will know!” “What if they fall out?!” Well I’m here to tell you, it’s waaaaay easier than you think. I have no idea why I waited so long to try them.

As I was trying to find a third way to recycle this green holiday sweater, I wanted to do something really different, and tried this boho glam look. But I don’t have the requisite long, beachy waves like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley when she wears a floppy hat. So I decided to fake it.

I went to Ulta, and looked at the entire row devoted to extensions, and was a little overwhelmed. But once I figured out what color I needed for my grown-out ombré, it was ridiculously easy to put them in and actually wear them. These are the hairdo. 16″ Ombré Extension by Ken Paves – yes, Jessica Simpson’s hairstylist. You clip up the top half of your hair, snap in the extensions with the six super strong clips (these extensions will NOT budge), then let down the top half of your hair over them, and just blend it all together. Voila! Long glamorous hair!

And you know what, if others find out that they’re fake, who cares?! It’s a fun temporary accessory, and if you feel like a Victoria’s Secret supermodel for a few hours, then that’s all that matters 🙂

1 Sweater, 3 Ways (part two)

20140111-201123.jpg20140111-200235.jpg
Hi everyone! Welcome to part two of “how to recycle a holiday sweater”. Yesterday we took this festive green sweater and turned it into a polished everyday work outfit. Now we’re going to make it a little edgier, just by changing out the accessories. Add a pretty-freaking-realistic faux leather jacket, studded oxfords (on sale right now!), a studded bag, and my favorite Warby Parker frames, and you’ve got a great city-chic alternative. Just a few little tweaks, that’s it!

Tomorrow we’re going boho glam for part three…. So excited!

1 Sweater, 3 Ways (part one)

20140109-154738.jpg

So I ordered this gorgeous sparkly green sweater from J.Crew, thinking it could be a cool option for some holiday parties.  And it was.  But now that it’s January, how do you take your holiday clothes and wear them with “normal” outfits for the rest of the year?  I almost just folded up this beauty and shoved it in the back of the closet, where it would sit until next December.  But then one night, as is typical for me at least five times per week, my sleep was interrupted by a fashion nightmare. “No, this sweater will NOT defeat me! I will make it cool for everyday outfits! There have got to be several ways to style it… I will conquer this sweater!!!”

So, here is part 1 of 3 different looks with this seemingly non-versatile sweater. This one could be called the ‘polished casual’ version. Something I could wear to work, or out shopping. I decided to actually put more jewelry over it, to layer the beading at the neckline. And I dig it. Gonna do it more often, in fact. And these loafers? O.M.G. They are soooo comfortable, so if you’ve been eyeing them on other bloggers, you should go for it!

*** And they are both 40% off right now at J.Crew.com with code TAKENOTE!!! ***

Next post will be the ‘edgy casual’ version of said sweater… Stay tuned!

And thank you again to the fabulous Kari Jenkins for helping to capture this moment of holiday-sweater-recycling coolness 😊

Burgundy is the color of the season, so these chic little pants from J.Crew are the perfect pop of subtle color to enhance a black and white outfit. These are the newer “full-length” Minnie pant, that are cut a little longer and leaner, but still “look good on everyone” as J.Crew claims. They are pretty magical, in my opinion. And there’s just a little pop of Chanel, too… my favorite eyeglasses with the signature Chanel tweed arms. They always work flawlessly as a way to class things up 😉

And if you haven’t picked up a pair of metallic cap-toe pumps this season, you are missing out on a killer wardrobe staple. I attempted to wear plain black suede ones with this particular outfit, and it was so… boring. Then I put on the cap-toe ones, and it just worked. I wear these with jeans, pants, tights – they just add a tiny bit of edginess to each look. Love them!

…I also picked up a sweet burgundy leather jacket from the new Nordstrom Rack here in JAX, so there is more burgundy to come!
