Shearling + Fire

Gosh, red lipstick is hard to pull off sometimes, right?  Finding the right shade of red is the first challenge, but then I feel like the entire time you’re wearing it, you’re constantly nervous about whether it’s migrated outside your lip line, onto your teeth, or onto whatever you’re wearing.  It’s hard to relax when you’re wearing a red lip.  I’m always on high alert.

So needless to say, I was terrified when Julie told me she wanted to try something bold, and subsequently retrieved the loudest, brightest red lipstick out of her makeup palette.  I’m pretty sure I looked horrified.  But when Julie is having a beauty ‘vision’, you don’t question it.  You just go with it.  You close your eyes and let her make a masterpiece.

Behold… Julie’s signature cat eye liner with a super-mega-bright lip… yes you can pull off both at the same time 🙂

P.S. – I stalked this shearling bomber jacket from TopShop for MONTHS until they re-stocked my size.  Yes, the collar was a little overbearing at first, but it always makes a feminine outfit just a little bit grittier, tougher.  Check out the link to the faux one below by Lily Aldridge for Velvet…

Plaid jumpsuit apparatus

I’m not gonna lie, I loooooove rompers and jumpsuits.  They’re like adult onesies.  You can enjoy wearing pants without having to agonize over what top to pair with them.  It’s all decided for you.  Brilliant.  But — and this is a huge caveat — you have to make sure they fit you PROPERLY.  Critical.  Non-negotiable.  Otherwise they actually look like a baby onesie.  Not a good look.  Except for babies.

Usually it’s a torso-proportion issue.  Too long, or too short.  Maybe you need a high-neck, flowy, wide-leg style to lengthen, or you might look better in a cute cropped trendy style with spaghetti straps.  Try various options to see what works.  And when you find a romper or jumpsuit that fits like a glove, you must go with it.  Embrace it.  Rock it.  Own it.

Such is the case with this jumpsuit from Zara.  Black watch plaid, sheer top, perfectly bloused out, slim pencil leg, expertly tailored.  Perfect!  All for the bargain price of $39.99 on sale!  Add some studded stilettos (last seen here & here), and you have a very simple chic look, no accessories required.  Let the statement piece speak for itself.

Maybe this inspires you to try on a jumpsuit next time you see one in the store?  I hope so 🙂

Rain rain, don’t go away!

It’s been really rainy here in FL lately, which is actually kind of GREAT since we can wear all our cute wellies!  I love any chance I get to wear my Hunter Tour wellingtons, they’re a closet staple.  I wear them in the rain with jeans, leggings, dresses, etc.  But also to the beach with the dog so I can run around in the waves.  And I’ve even worn them as snow boots with big fuzzy socks.  They’re kind of perfect for everything.  And at the end of the day, just rinse them off with the hose and stash them back in the closet.

The Hunter Tour boot is much lighter and slimmer than the original ones.  And you can wrap the leg around the base to pack them in your suitcase, too.  They’ve made recent appearances on the blog here and here 🙂

Pray for more rain!

Leather ‘n Lime

If you are reading this blog post and are currently wearing various shades of grey, or brown, maybe navy, or perhaps black… This is an Intervention. 🙂

Time to TURN UP THE COLOR!! Even if it’s just a bright scarf, or really fun socks. Start small if you want to. Have fun with your outfits every day, wear vibrant colors that make you happy, colors that make you glow. Because wearing all black might be slimming, but it sure doesn’t do much to illuminate your complexion and your radiance.

And the best part? You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make this change. This bright lime green sweater? Old Navy. $15. And it takes this average black & grey outfit from boring to exciting, IMHO 🙂

Also making an appearance are my faaaaavorite leather leggings from J.Brand, last seen here and here. They seriously go with everything. I always advocate that you invest in the classic pieces, and save on the trendy ones.

Okay, so let’s recap: our 2015 wardrobe resolution is to Wear. More. Color.

Happy shopping!

Happy Neon Year!

Happy New Year, everyone!

One of my resolutions for my 2015 wardrobe is to turn up the color. I look in my closet and see so much grey and black and navy. Time to start pairing those items with more vibrant accents… so naturally I’ll start with neon yellow! Why not?! It’s a happy, electric color that looks killer with a classic black leather jacket.

You’ll be seeing more color from here on out… how about lime green, bright fuschia, and cobalt blue? Yes please!

And I’m also working on stepping out of my makeup comfort zone, and playing with colors I wouldn’t normally choose. Thanks to the amazing Julie Funkey for the gorgeous eye shadow and lip colors, so soft and pretty 🙂

I hope you have a fun fashion year, too… don’t be afraid to experiment with color and express yourself!

Hunter & Highland

I’m so thrilled that it’s almost officially Winter… which means it’s more like Fall weather here in Florida 😉

It’s easy to swap out your footwear to make a warm-weather outfit into a cold-weather outfit.  Throw on some over-the-knee boots with that summer dress, and a leather jacket, and you’ve got a whole new look.  These are the Stuart Weitzman Highlands.  Perfect.  In every way possible.

Or, my personal favorite is wearing my Hunter boots with EVERYTHING.  Mine are the Hunter Tour packable version, with a narrow calf and more flexible fit compared to the originals.  I needed them here since my photographer extraordinaire, Kari Jenkins, has been dying to shoot at the Walter Jones Historic Park.  So we trudged down the path and found the perfect ray of sunshine 🙂

Stay warm, everyone!

Fair Isle + Leather

Yup. It’s cold. Gonna be cold for awhile. So…. lucky for us, it’s leather leggings time, once again! Yay!

If you’ve been thinking about buying some leather leggings, please just go for it. You will love them! These J.Brand skinnies are still one of my favorite pieces in my closet for both dressy and casual looks. And while leather always loosens a bit (buy at least one size down!), these haven’t lost their shape, since the leather is bonded to a stretch fabric. So smart, those folks at J.Brand 🙂

I’m also a new fan of the color red, thanks to this little gingham workhorse shirt from J.Crew that just seems to go with everything. J.Crew has some new patterns for the fall/winter season, and I also just bought this beautiful plaid from Banana Republic (photos coming soon! I’ve been wearing it nonstop!!).

And who doesn’t love a good tribal or fair isle print sweater?! They are still “in”, so we can recycle from last season – thank goodness. Some good ones this season are here, here, and here. And if you don’t want an actual print, try this ombré one. And I must own this one… Must.

Stay warm!
